Judd Apatow: Comedian Behind the Camera

Judd Apatow: Comedian Behind the Camera

At a recent Q&A following an advance screening of the riotous comedy "Superbad," a woman in the audience asked the film's producer Judd Apatow if he makes "romantic comedies for men."

"That sounds like product or a lube," replied the 39-year-old filmmaker.

Apatow, the director of "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" and the new "Knocked Up," acknowledged such a label wasn't far off the mark, but said he doesn't think much about categorizing what he does. Besides, he said, "Isn't there love in every movie?"

A classification like "romantic comedies for men" also doesn't do justice to other staples of Apatow's work namely, an endless barrage of filthy jokes, cleverly delivered. And yet Apatow's comedy always maintains as Seth Rogen, the star of "Knocked Up" and a frequent collaborator of Apatow's, says an "oddly sweet" quality.

Thanks to the huge success of 2005's "The 40 Year-Old Virgin," Apatow has broken through to the mainstream after a career that has spanned contributions to some of the most critically acclaimed comedies of the past 15 years from "The Ben Stiller Show" to "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy."

With the Friday release of the eagerly awaited "Knocked Up," it's clear he's become a behind-the-scenes ringleader to a thriving era of comedy that revels in mixing the dumb with the smart, the bawdy with the sincere.

"I'm trying to figure out how to get gigantic laughs without losing my reality level," the wry, bearded Apatow explained over lunch at a recent interview in New York. "That's always the dance."

Even as a teenager, Apatow was at the center of comedy.

For his high-school radio show on Long Island in the mid-`80s, he managed to interview Jerry Seinfeld, Howard Stern, the original writers of "Saturday Night Live" and many others.

"I really met EVERYBODY over the course of two years," Apatow recalls. "I would just ask them how they did it. It was an excuse to spend an hour asking: How do you write a joke?"

Apatow later moved West to study screenwriting at USC, where he dropped out within two years thanks, in part, to a free trip won on "The Dating Game" a comic twist in Apatow's biography worthy of one of his films.

As a struggling standup, he lived with Adam Sandler and began writing jokes for other comedians, eventually writing for Roseanne Barr. His first and only attempt to work in front of the camera was quickly scuttled after a trip to an acting coach.

"It was the worst acting anyone has ever done," says Apatow. "At that moment, the dream of comedian becoming actor died. I folded my cards immediately."

Rejections by "Saturday Night Live" and "In Living Color" followed, but then he met Ben Stiller. Apatow executive-produced "The Ben Stiller Show" (1992), the short-lived but acclaimed Fox sketch show that spawned the careers of a myriad of comedians, including Stiller, David Cross, Bob Odenkirk and Andy Dick.

"In a lot of ways, that's where everything started," says Apatow. "People connect the dots and see all the people I've worked with, but really, it all comes from Stiller."

He then wrote for five years on HBO's "The Larry Sanders Show," eventually becoming an executive producer. The show's star, Garry Shandling remains a mentor.

Like the dialogue of "Knocked Up," Apatow's speech is riddled with pop-culture references. He grew up obsessed with the Marx Brothers and Steve Martin, watched Woody Allen films endlessly, considers Harold Ramis' movies ("Caddyshack," "Groundhog Day") "a gigantic influence" and found inspiration in the mix of humor and realism in films like "Terms of Endearment" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

To Apatow, his greatest achievement is "Freaks and Geeks," the beloved cult favorite hour-long TV series that ran for only one season in 1999-2000. The show, created by Paul Feig and executive produced by Apatow, was followed by another acclaimed but canceled series: "Undeclared."

"In a way, the movies are an extension of those TV shows," says Apatow. "Some people have been saying, `Do you feel like the reason these movies ("Virgin," "Knocked Up") are doing OK is because your work is getting better?' And I'm always like, `No, I don't think I'll ever make anything as good as "Freaks and Geeks."'"

The lack of commercial success on the small screen led Apatow to concentrate on producing film projects, including a number of Will Ferrell films: "Anchorman," "Kicking and Screaming" and "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky and Bobby."

"He obviously has this unique talent of someone who can make what would probably be classified as a broad comedy, but yet he's finding ways to deal with these real issues that we all face," says Ferrell. "He's tackling them in ways we haven't seen before."

The box-office success of "Anchorman" helped Apatow get backing for "Virgin," his directorial debut, which he co-wrote with Steve Carell.

"It gave me a career path," he says. "The beginning of my career was mainly about helping my friends execute their ideas, which was really fun but it wasn't based on my personal point of view."

"Knocked Up," also written by Apatow, is very personal for him. Though the film in which Rogen plays an immature pothead who has parenthood thrust upon him after a one-night stand with a far more professional woman (Katherine Heigl) isn't directly autobiographical, the issues of facing adulthood are familiar to the director.

Further, much of Apatow's life can be seen on screen. His wife, actress Leslie Mann, co-stars; their two young daughters play her character's children; Ramis symbolically plays a wise father to Rogen; and a good number of the actors from his past TV shows and movies have notable parts or make cameos.

Mann, whom Apatow met while working on the Jim Carrey movie "The Cable Guy," says that while everything in "Knocked Up" has been reflected against a "funhouse mirror," much of it is culled from their relationship. For example, the scene where Allison (Heigl) boots Ben (Rogen) from the car while driving to the gynecologist was taken directly from an argument of theirs.

Frequently working with his close-knit troupe of friends and actors, Apatow's style is heavy on improvisation and collaboration. The famous "You know why I know you're gay?" running bit in "Virgin" was improvised, and "Knocked Up" provides a similar gag based on a setup of "You look like..." to describe an extremely hairy character (Martin Starr).

A recently released two-disc DVD edition of "Virgin" includes footage of Apatow relentlessly shouting new lines to his actors as they riff their way through a scene a method he calls "rewriting while the cameras are rolling." Apatow also holds numerous screenings of early cuts of his films for filmmaker friends in hopes of garnering feedback.

"What really sets him apart is just how collaborative he is, and how confident in yourself you have to be in order to be collaborative and take ideas from your actors and your friends," says Rogen, who was a teenager when Apatow cast him in "Freaks and Geeks."

"Knocked Up," which was completed in February, arrives in theaters on a sizable wave of buzz, aided by very early screenings to critics and press. As a relatively low-budget film starring the little-known Rogen, it's a film that needs substantial word-of-mouth to compete with summer blockbusters.

The low-cost, laugh-heavy approach has proven appealing to studios; "Virgin" grossed $109 million at the box office on a production budget of $26 million. "Knocked Up," rated-R like "Virgin," is also in the same budget range and was well received by Universal Pictures, Apatow says.

"They may have just been happy that I didn't ask for triple the budget and robots," he deadpans.

Another key to his success is that he's largely been able to keep creative control of his films. Mann says he passed on numerous films before making "Virgin." Now, after years of unsold scripts pilling up, Apatow's projects are getting the green light.

Besides "Superbad," this year will also see the release of another Apatow production, "The Pineapple Express," which was written by Rogen. Next year will be "Walk Hard," a mock biopic in the style of "Ray" starring John C. Reilly and "You Don't Mess with the Zohan," which Apatow co-wrote with Sandler.

"It's almost more than a Jew from Long Island can handle," Apatow says of his good fortune. "All my assumptions about myself are confused when people like the work. On some level, it's almost more comfortable for it to go the other way."

Cannes Best Actress Turned Down Role

Cannes Best Actress Turned Down Role

South Korean actress Jeon Do-yeon said Wednesday she initially turned down the role that earned her the best actress award at this year's Cannes Film Festival because she couldn't understand the character's motivation.

Jeon, 34, won the prize for playing a widow struggling to cope with her husband's death in "Secret Sunshine."

"I turned down the offer at first because I could not understand from just reading the script the feelings and circumstances that (lead character) Shin-ae experiences," she said.

But then director Lee Chang-dong helped her understand, and "when I read the script again after that, I could feel Shin-ae's pain that I couldn't before," Jeon told a news conference carried live on national TV.

"I wanted to experience it and know what would be the end of the pain," she said.

Secret Sunshine is the name of a town in southeastern South Korea where the character Shin-ae's husband was born. She moves to the town following her husband's death, but loses her son there, too.

South Korea has heralded Jeon as a new national hero. Her award garnered front-page news coverage and drew congratulations from President Roh Moo-hyun.

Barbra Streisand Cancels Rome Concert

Barbra Streisand Cancels Rome Concert

Barbra Streisand canceled her concert in Rome next month a move that followed protests by Italian consumer groups angered by what they said were excessively high ticket prices.

Concert organizers indicated the decision was not connected to the outcry, saying that production delays had forced them to scrap the June 15 concert in the capital's Stadio Flaminio, what would have been the singer's first concert in Italy and the start of her European tour.

"We met with unexpected production delays," said a statement by tour promoter Michael Cohl posted on the Web site of Milano Concerti, the Italian organizer of the event.

"We deeply apologize to the fans in Rome," Cohl said in the statement, adding that ticket holders would be refunded and given the opportunity to book a spot for one of Streisand's other European concerts.

Organizers were not immediately available Monday morning for further comment.

Last week, consumer groups Codacons and Adusbef protested as "absurd and shameful" ticket prices ranging from just under $200 to more than $1,200, calling on authorities to deny Streisand use of the 24,000-seat stadium.

The stadium "is public property and cannot be used for immoral deals that are shameful to a civilized country," the groups said in a statement.

Instead of the Rome concert, Streisand's Web site listed a new date a June 18 concert in Zurich, Switzerland as the kickoff for the star's tour.

Streisand's 2006 U.S. tour was ranked the second-highest grossing tour in North America last year, generating $92.5 million in gross sales, with the average ticket price at $298. The Rolling Stones tour ranked first.

After the Zurich event, Streisand's monthlong European tour has concerts scheduled in Austria, France, Ireland and Britain.

'The Bachelor,' New Fiancee Go to Hawaii

'The Bachelor,' New Fiancee Go to Hawaii

Returning to Hawaii with his new fiancee, "The Bachelor" Andy Baldwin said keeping his engagement to Tessa Horst a secret for two months was excruciating.

Baldwin and Horst went to the islands Friday after a week of media appearances following the ABC show's finale, which was aired Monday but filmed two months ago. The couple were welcomed by about 100 fans at a press conference at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider on Waikiki Beach.

Baldwin recalled people driving by him on the freeway, yelling "Pick Tessa!" He said he wanted to respond, "I already did."

Baldwin, a 30-year-old doctor, Navy diver and triathlete, said he has no plans of parlaying his newfound stardom into a modeling or acting career. He still has a year left at Pearl Harbor and is considering another tour of duty.

"Fact of the matter is, I'm committed to the Navy," he said.

A wedding date has not been set, but Baldwin says he envisions one with a Hawaiian and Navy flair, including tropical flowers and an arch of swords ceremony.

Horst wore a red dress, floral lei and her sparkling Chopard diamond engagement ring, which she was not allowed to wear until this week. Baldwin was dressed casually in linen pants and slippers.

As Baldwin answered questions about his cheesy lines on the show, one reporter asked Horst about her ethnic background. Horst is of Chinese and Polish ancestry.

"I always say the mutts are the most exotic and beautiful," Baldwin joked.

Both said they are taking things slow and getting back to their regular lives. Horst said she will move to Hawaii from the San Francisco Bay Area in a few months and will find a job in social work.

"It's been a long road, so this is like the light at the end," Horst said.

Actress Bijou Phillips is sick of being bad

Actress Bijou Phillips is sick of being bad

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Actress Bijou Phillips is fed up with being cast as the bad girl.

Phillips, 27, who has appeared in a raft of films over the past eight years, says she is always being typecast due to her reputation of being a "wild child" during her teens.

"A lot of the time I end up playing the bad girl. I would love to play the sweet, innocent nice girl down the street, but I don't know if it will happen," Phillips told Reuters in an interview ahead of the June 8 opening of her latest movie, "Hostel II."

Phillips, the daughter of the late 1960s rock star John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, became a favorite in tabloid headlines as she hit the New York party scene in her teens after starting to model at age 13 and leaving home.

She gave up modeling at the age of 17 to embark on a music career with her debut album "I'd Rather Eat Glass," a reference to her former profession. She is currently working on her second album but acting is now her main focus.

But controversy was never far behind her. She posed nude in Playboy magazine seven years ago, and pleaded no contest in 2004 to a criminal charges after a fight with Playboy Playmate Nicole Marie Lenz in a Los Angeles nightclub.

Phillips, however, often photographed with sibling "celebutantes" Paris and Nicky Hilton, says her wild days are behind her -- but it is hard to shake this image.

"This has stuck with me and the parts they offer me. There is an image of me out there, but I would love for everyone to let me grow up and play adult roles," she said.

Phillips says she avoids the celebrity scene and has cleaned up her act.

"You have to stay away from people who have that kind of attention. I've been down that road and at the end of the day it only hinders your career," she said.

"When you want to grow up and do some real work the things you did -- even though they did not seem a big deal -- that gave you a bad girl image, reckless, drugs, whatever, do play a part in the long run, and in the end it is hard to shake that."

Does she regret her past?

"No. It is what it is," she said.

"But now I own a house with my boyfriend (actor Danny Masterson), and then I go off and play the bad girl. I would love to play something that I relate more to now."

Get Naked to fight the common cold

Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan certainly has some knowledge of physics, for she seems to knows that heat lost by a body is equal to heat gained by it.

Based on the Law of Conservation of Energy, the actress seems to have found a remedy for fighting the common cold, and hence discards every stitch of clothing from her body when she's feverish.

Nicollette claims this allows her body to breathe and emit heat into the atmosphere.

The actress also admits she once dived into the pool at Sheridan's winter retreat in skiing mecca Aspen, Colorado to get rid of her cold.

"I ran naked into the cold pool. I was cleaning my house naked. I had a cold and it's (being naked) the normal thing to do when I'm feverish," Contactmusic quoted her, as saying.

Hot text messages spice up Carmen's Sex Life!

Former ‘Baywatch’ babe Carmen Electra like nothing better than to send, and receive, naughty text messages.

The actress, who is releasing a new book ‘How To Be Sexy’, says in it that she loves to indulge in a racy phone message conversation every now and then.

"I am a texter, I love to text. There is nothing wrong with getting a hot text," The Sun quoted her, as saying.

However, she does warn faithful fans that while they should definitely go ahead and express how they are feeling, they should also be ‘subtle’.

"I say go for it - but be subtle. Express how you are feeling but don't do anything too crazy," she writes.

Her most important piece of advice however, is that you should double check to see whether the message is being sent to the right person.

And despite the fact that she is considered one of the sexiest women in Hollywood, Carmen insists that even she has flaws. The only difference is that she doesn’t delve on them.

"There are problem areas. You look in the mirror and pick apart the things that you don't like about your body," she writes.

"But what I have tried to do is not obsess over what I don't like about myself," she added.

Winslet injured after filming sex scene

Actress Kate Winslet was hurt after filming a sex scene in a sink for the movie "Little Children".

According to contactmusic.com, Winslet had to act with actor Patrick Wilson in the movie. The scene was shot in a laundry room and was far from sexy.

She says: "We both had little coverings on the pieces that we didn't want people to see. We spent the most time saying to each other, 'You know, I think your little plastic covering may be coming off a little. Let's get them to put some glue on there.

"We rehearsed the scene fully clothed, without anyone in the room - just us and (director) Todd (Field), and we just got a general shape of the scene so we knew what to expect. We did look out for each other and we laughed a hell of a lot. It sounds ridiculous but at a certain point you forget that you're naked with a relative stranger.

"It's really weird. My hips and backside really hurt the next day. They put some pad across the front of the seat and I was sitting on something slightly cushioned. It's all so ridiculous this crazy job we do for a living."

Paris Hilton’s Prison Sentence Shortened

It looks like Paris Hilton is indeed going to the big house, only maybe for not as long as she thought. It was released this week that the heiress will serve a shorter sentence than previously thought. Miss Hilton will only have to serve about half of the 45 days she was sentenced to, according to officials. She will spend about 23 days in a “special needs housing unit” at the Century Regional Detention Center in suburban Lynwood, Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said. This special needs unit is separated from the general population of the prison. Hilton will stay in a unit that contains 12 two-person cells reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates. “She may or may not have a cellmate,” according to Whitmore. The duration of Paris’ stay in the “County Hilton” was shortened due to her good behavior, such as her recent court appearance and other factors. Like everyone else in the 2,200-inmate facility, Hilton will get at least an hour outside her cell each day to shower, watch television, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on the telephone. It looks like Paris just might be embracing her jail time like a mature young woman. Last week, Hilton said in a statement released by her new attorney that she was “ready to face the consequences of violating probation.” She is scheduled to report to jail by June 5th. Enjoy the pictures of Paris doing her thing on Tuesday (May 16).

Sandra Bullock Granted Protection By Judge

Having a stalker can be creepy. And for Sandra Bullock it’s gotten creepy to the point that she’s taking more legal action. The actress petitioned a Huntington Beach court to extend the restraining order against Marcia Diana Valentine, and the court granted her request.

Bullock testified that Marcia Diana Valentine on five separate occasions left woven palm fronds in her yard with “weird signs” and “pieces of animal fur.” Bullock informed the court that Valentine tossed the objects over her gate and also left them in the neighbor’s planter.

This all comes after the attempted overrunning of Bullock’s husband, Jesse James. The Gossip Girls brought you the story of Valentine’s Mercedes Benz assault of the motorcycle man earlier this year. After that incident, Bullock received a temporary restraining order against Valentine. Now that temporary order has been extended.

Judge Thomas Borris issued the order, which forbids Valentine from coming within 500 yards of Bullock, her husband and his three children for the next three years.

Valentine remains free on $25,000 bail, and prosecutors are still reviewing the case. She is due to appear in the same courthouse on May 22. Hopefully this time the restraining order will keep James and Bullock safe from the stalking of wacko Valentine.

Cameron Diaz's Topless treat at Caribbean

Cameron Diaz left lucky sunbathers at a Caribbean beach gasping for more when she peeled off her bikini top.

The blonde actress looked relaxed and happy as she made the most of the sun on her Bahamas break with a group of girlfriends, including 'Charlie's Angels' co-star Drew Barrymore.

According to an onlooker, the two Charlie’s Angels stars, sans boyfriends, were taking a little time off at the beach when Diaz decided that the best way to enjoy the sea was without her bikini top.

And, it seems that the men were certainly appreciative of the sight of the perky actress in all her natural beauty, for it left them longing for more.

"They came on the beach in a big group and Cam and Drew went straight into the sea. The men couldn't believe their luck when Cam peeled off her bikini top," the Mirror quoted the onlooker, as saying.

One onlooker said, "Cameron looked in fantastic shape. She was with a gaggle of girl pals and they spent ages riding the waves.

Back on the Caribbean beach, the Hollywood actress sent her friends into fits of laughter by performing a comic robotic dance.

Pamela Anderson bares all for fur!

Pamela Anderson, an active animal rights activist, promoted the cause of PETA by baring her all in Stella McCartney's shop window at Bruton Street, London on 28 June.

The actress stripped off to show that she would rather go nude than wear fur as the famous People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals slogan suggests.

Anderson was one of several big names, including Louise Redknapp, former X-Files actress Gillian Anderson and jumpsuit-wearing Sadie Frost to attend the event, where she also criticised Hollywood stars for wearing fur.

"My message would be to please start using fake fur. It's terrible because people see stars like J Lo and Beyonce wearing fur and they don't think about the cruelty that goes into it," Press Association quoted the former Baywatch star, as saying. "I'm here to hopefully raise a lot of money and if we raise enough I'll strip naked in the shop window," she added.

I think I'm more sexual than anyone: Lindsay

Lindsay Lohan believes that it's redheads and not blondes or brunettes that have the most active social lives, and she's got a issue of Playboy to back up her claim.

Lindsay, who recently celebrated her twentieth birthday, said that when it comes to being sexy, flame-haired women beat their fellow counterparts hands down.

The 'Mean Girls' star said that she also has a Playboy book called 'Redheads' to back up what she says.

"I have this Playboy book called Redheads in my room. I was reading all these things about how redheads are more passionate, and apparently they're much more sexual than girls with other hair colours," The Sun quoted her, as saying.

And, Lohan also thinks that she falls true to the red-head tradition of being more sexual.

"I think I'm more sexual than my friends. I'm more comfortable in my skin. I'm a sexual person, definitely," she added.

Pamela Anderson dating a mystery man?

Recently, buxom blonde, Pamela Anderson, was spotted getting romantic with a mysterious man at L.A. club Winston's, if reports are to be believed.

The 'Baywatch' beauty arrived at the place with three other men, but it seems that her love interset was this tall, curly, brown-haired man.

As the two sat at the VIP table, the 39-year-old started to get hot with her man with minor flirtations and then she began kissing him, rubbing his neck and later sat on his lap, reports Us Weekly.

But, the mystery man was not the kind that pammy has been associated with so far because he tried playing a bit coy.

Sources also said that the mum of two seemed to be smitten by her date, and that she couldn't avoid gazing into his eyes.

These are not my breasts: Keira Knightley

Actress Keira Knightley was shocked when she saw the first posters for her film "King Arthur" because her breasts were digitally enhanced in it.

According to contactmusic.com, Knightley played Guinevere and was surprised to see her breasts ridiculously enhanced. She says: "Those things certainly weren't mine. I remember we had an interesting discussion when the studio said, 'We want to make them slightly larger. And you'll get approval.'

"I was like, OK, fine. I honestly don't give a s**t.' But then they showed me the first copy and these things must have been double Es, and they were down to my knees!

I was like, 'I don't mind you making them bigger, but don't give me f**king droopy breasts! They look like your grandmother's t**s!' So, for the posters, they were back to the C-cup."
