Imran Khan's ex-wife Jemima concerned over his arrest

LONDON: The ex-wife of Pakistani politician Imran Khan has voiced concern at his arrest, and hit out at President Pervez Musharraf's "brutal and oppressive" government.

Jemima Khan, who was married to the former Pakistan cricket captain for nearly a decade, said on Wednesday she understood he was being held in a police station where he had been charged under anti-terrorism laws.

"The latest information I have got is that they have charged him under the terrorism act, but this hasn't been confirmed," she said, adding that she had "been told that he will be moved to the local prison".

"I am worried, we are all worried. This is just one more sign that Musharraf has become one of Pakistan's most brutal and oppressive dictators ever."

Khan was speaking after Pakistani police arrested Khan after he emerged from hiding to join a student protest in Lahore.

She said she had not heard from her ex-husband since his arrest, unlike in recent days. "We have had contact with him every day," she said.

Khan, who took part in a demonstration in London at the weekend, said she was preparing to participate in another rally.

"I want to keep up the pressure and highlight that the people affected by this are from all walks of life," she said.

"It is teachers, lawyers, students, journalists -- these people have been targeted while known terrorists are on the loose and have not been put on trial despite Musharraf's words."
