British princess visits Machu Picchu, Peru

LIMA (AFP) - Britain's Princess Beatrice visited Peru's ancient Inca site of Machu Picchu on Wednesday, the second day of her visit to the mountainous Andean nation, the British embassy here said.

Beatrice, 18, was due to stay until Thursday at the site of the pre-Columbian city, a spectacular terraced array of sanctuary buildings bound by soaring peaks and tropical forest.

The princess is fifth in line to the British throne as the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II's second son, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, and the Duchess, Sarah Ferguson.

She was accompanied on the trip by four people, including friends and guards.

Machu Picchu, labelled one of the seven wonders of the world, also received visits this year from the Hollywood actress Cameron Diaz and Microsoft tech tycoon Bill Gates. Beatrice's mother
