British actor Jude Law in Afghanistan to promote peace

KABUL (AFP) - British actor Jude Law said Thursday in Kabul that he had taken part in a documentary in Afghanistan to promote the United Nations' International Day of Peace, on September 21.

"Afghanistan will be the focal point for the second film," for the organisation Peace One Day," said Law, an ambassador for the group, at the UN mission in Kabul.

The team toured schools in Jalalabad in the east of Afghanistan in conditions of great secrecy for security reasons.

Peace One Day founder, Jeremy Gilley, said the premiere of the film would be in Kabul next spring.

"We will bring this film back to where it was made," he said, saying it would be shown in around 50 festivals around the country.

Since 2001, the United Nations has tried to make the International Day of Peace a day of non-violence, calling for ceasefires around the world, after a campaign organised by Mr Gilley.

Afghanistan is still plagued with insurrection and daily fighting in the south of the country between the Taliban and international forces.
